This application may be distributed without charge as long as it is accompanied by this document. It may also be distributed as part of a Shareware/Freeware collection CD (or other similar media).
System Requirements
For best performance your computer needs the following:-
• 68020 processor or greater(fast 68040 recommended).
• An FPU is NOT required.
• 256 color/grey scale display.
• 640 x 480 or greater display setting.
• 2.5MB of free RAM. (3MB recommended, 5Mb on a PowerMac)
• 2MB Disk space.
• System 7.1 or later(works fine with System 8.0).
• Quick Time extension.
• Quick Time Musical Instruments (for music).
• The following standard fonts:- Courier, Chicago, Geneva.
Although MFM will run on a 68020 based machine, in practice a large delay will be experienced when changing screens.
It is possible to run MFM in only 16 colors but the colors are garish and make uncomfortable viewing. If you have only 16 colors then try using grey scales.
Trouble Shooting
MFM does not install any extensions in your system folder but simply uses the files within its own directory. To run MFM, simply double click the MFM icon. If your machine lacks resources, such as memory, then certain problems may arise:-
• Less than 256 Colors
MFM can be played in 16 colors, however:-
a) The colors will be garish making it difficult to distinguish information.
b) MFM will run much more slowly.
• Problem loading saved game.
This can occur under OS8 and is usually caused by a system extension such as ‘Mac OS Easy Open’. The answer is to disable the extension.
• Memory Shortage
MFM will run in 2MB of RAM but more RAM gives better long term reliability. If you have to use Virtual Memory then most probably the music will stutter, especially on slower machines.
To increase the RAM that MFM can use, select the MFM application and then choose 'Get Info' from 'File' menu on the Finder menu bar. Next change the Preferred size to the desired RAM value. If you have plenty of RAM, MFM will run faster in a RAM disk.
If RAM is short then:
a) MFM may crash when a simulated match is being played.
b) At times, the game may slow down as memory is reassigned.
c) The background music may pause or stutter.
• Missing Fonts
Only standard fonts are required but they may be missing on some machines.
a) Without them distorted tables and misaligned messages may occur.
• QuickTime Extensions
The music works best under QT2.5 and plays less well under QT3.
a) IF Quick Time is missing then MFM graphics will not work correctly.
b) If QT Musical Instruments is missing then distorted music results.
• Ram Doubler
a) MFM works well under Ram Doubler but the music may occasionally stutter.
